Robert Downey Jr. is done being Iron man. And he is now moving on to a non-Marvel project. It is unusual to see Robert Downey without the Avengers team in the new trailer of Dolittle. But we better adjust to the new avatar!
Universal has renamed ‘The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle’ to just ‘Dolittle’. The trailer shows Robert Downey in the shoes of Dolittle that narrates the classic story about a man who has the ability to speak to animals. Dolittle, a comedy film directed by Stephen Gaghan is based on the famous character ‘Doctor Dolittle’. This is the same character that we fell in love within the 1967 original Dolittle. And then again in the 1998 remake with Eddie Murphy.
The upcoming movie cast includes award-winning actors, from Bohemian Rhapsody’s Rami Malek to Spider-Man: Far From Home’s Tom Holland. Apart from that, the cast includes Selena Gomez, Emma Thompson, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Sheen, Antonio Banderas, Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer, John Cena, Craig Robinson, Marion Cotillard, Frances de la Tour, and Carmen Ejogo.
Robert Downey Jr. as Dr. Dolittle
Dolittle trailer shows Dr. John Dolittle (Robert Downey Jr.) losing his wife seven years earlier. The doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria’s have become a recluse, residing far away behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor. There he lives with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company. When the young queen (Jessie Buckley) falls ill, Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure.
Downey regains his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures. Along the way, he encounters a host of perilous dangers. These include a ferocious tiger who calls him “lunch,” backed up by his animal friends a gorilla, an ostrich, and an octopus to name a few.
Robert Downey Jr.’s first project post-Marvel
For the past decade Robert Downey Jr. has been fighting along Thor, Captain America, the Hulk and more in order to protect our planet from all kinds of enemies. Dolittle will mark the first project of Robert Downey’s post acting in ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
In an interview, Downey talked about leaving Tony Stark and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In his own words: “I had an incredible ten-year run that was creatively satisfying. It was very, very, very hard work and I dug very deep, but I have not been forced to explore the new frontier of what is my creative and personal life after this,” the actor said. “First thing you learn in theater arts: Aesthetic distance,” he added.
Dolittle Initial Release
Dolittle was initially scheduled for release in April this year before getting moved to January 17, 2020. Jonathan Liebesman is offering a helping hand to credited director Stephen Gaghan. The film has undergone several shuffles in recent months, with Universal Pictures renaming the flick “Dolittle” in place of its original title “The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.” The film, Dolittle is executively produced by Robert Downey Jr., Sarah Bradshaw, and Zachary Roth.
People are vouching that Dolittle might just be the second coming of ‘John Carter’. Universal will still be just fine if their reliable IP offerings come through. And that’s presuming that Dolittle doesn’t hit a nerve and soar to $400 million worldwide, which is (however unlikely) entirely possible.
