The 2020 Oscar is on its way, we have the possible list of contenders who will be nominated for the upcoming 92nd Academy Awards. The award ceremony is presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). The Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
For this year’s Academy Awards, there are a record 93 countries that submitted entries which are up by six from last year. The nations represented ranged from A (Albania) to V (Vietnam). At this year’s Academy Awards, there is a change in the category name from “Best Foreign Language Film” to “Best International Feature Film”.
In 2019 awards we saw 87 submissions, with nominations for Lebanon’s Capernaum, Poland’s Cold War, Germany’s Never Look Away and Japan’s Shoplifters. The 92nd Academy Awards will take place on February 9, 2020.
The predictions can change before nominees are announced on January 13. So, here are the Oscar contenders for 2020.
1. The Farewell
The Farewell, the American comedy-drama film that follows a family that gets to know their grandmother has only a short time left. They decide not to tell her and schedule a family gathering before she dies. A personal film is directed by Lulu Wang.
The film is likely to be nominated for Best Picture and Best Actress (Awkwafina), Best Supporting Actress (Zhao Shuzhen), Best Original Screenplay, Best Director (Lulu Wang), Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score. So, they seem fit as contenders for the Oscar 2020. The movie is based on Wang’s life experiences, she first publicly discussed as part of her radio story What You Don’t Know. It then appeared as part of an episode of This American Life.
2. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
It’s difficult to tell what makes ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ so good without talking about what happens in it. The movie is critically acclaimed box office success. It can get nominations for Best Picture, Best Director (Quentin Tarantino), Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), Best Supporting Actor (Brad Pitt), Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Film Editing.
Tarantino’s last, The Hateful Eight, didn’t have much luck in the Oscars race. But Hollywood loves a story about itself and it will probably be powerless to resist this film from one of its favorite auteurs. The movie’s promotion has done a good job of keeping things mysterious, especially at hiding the facts that, underneath all the traditional hyper-stylized Tarantino trappings. There could be several contenders in Oscar 2020 for the specific categories.
3. Joker
It’s not a superhero movie, it’s our first genuine supervillain movie. And it’s unlike anything we normally associate with comic book blockbusters. Joker shows a mentally-troubled comedian Arthur Fleck who embarks on a downward spiral of social revolution and bloody crime. Joaquin Phoenix is definitely the contender in Oscar 2020 for Best Actor. With that, the movie could be nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Picture Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing Makeup & Hairstyling.
The movie won the Golden Lion at Venice that increased its chances of becoming Oscar bait. This will be Joaquin Phoenix’s first Oscar. Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of a twisted but empathetic and ‘human’ Joker who leads Gotham into events that set the city on fire awed fans.
4. Jojo Rabbit
The American black comedy film, Jojo Rabbit is written and directed by Taika Waititi. The movie plot shows Hitler-inspired youth, who finds out his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their attic. It is based on the book Caging Skies by Christine Leunens.
The movie has contenders that can be nominated for the Oscar 2020. So, the movie can be nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress (Scarlett Johansson and Thomasin McKenzie), Best Film Editing, and Best Costume Design. In all, it is actually mostly a sweet tale of a kid who learns how hateful the ideology he’s aligning himself with really is.
5. Parasite
Bong Joon-ho directed the South Korean dark comedy thriller The Parasite. The movie shows, Ki-Taek’s family taking a peculiar interest in the wealthy and glamorous Parks for their livelihood. However, an unexpected incident entangles them. The movie’s nominations could likely be for Best Picture, Best Director (Bong Jong-Hoo), Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film (South Korea), Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design.
The Palme d’Or winner from Cannes is a major triumph for Korean director Bong Joon Ho, whose last two films were the zany-slash-terrifying Snowpiercer and Okja. The movie is universally praised and an automatic 2020 Oscar contender.
6. Richard Jewell
In the upcoming biographical drama film, Richard Jewell tells the story of an American security guard working for AT&T. Paul Walter Hauser plays Richard Jewell. He heroically saves lives from an exploding bomb at the 1996 Olympics but is unjustly vilified by journalists and the press who consider him a suspect.
But the movie could very well worm its way into the Oscar 2020 winners list as the movie contenders that can be nominated. While last year’s The Mule didn’t make much of an impact. However, there is some controversy around this movie. It is noted conservative director depicting a famous case of the media getting it wrong.
7. Clemency
Chinonye Chukwu wrote and directed Clemency. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2019. Moreover, the movie won the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize there, making Chukwu the first black woman to win the award. So we see her as the contender in the Oscar 2020 as well. Also, Alfre Woodard has a chance for Best Actress.
The movie also stars Richard Schiff, Danielle Brooks, Michael O’Neill, Richard Gunn, Wendell Pierce, and Aldis Hodge. So, the film is about Bernadine Williams, a Death Row prison warden. Consequently, years of carrying out death row executions take a toll on prison warden Bernadine Williams.
8. The Irishman
Netflix aired a cryptic but powerful ad for its next major awards play. Martin Scorsese produced and directed the 2019 American epic crime film The Irishman. The movie is based on the 2004 memoir I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt. Fans of the director’s work are excited about his latest venture as it’s his first since 2016’s Silence.
The movie has many contenders for the Oscar 2020. Noah Baumbach wrote and directed the American comedy-drama film Marriage Story. However, the film releases on 6th November and on 6th December on Netflix. The plot shows stage director and an actress struggle through a grueling, coast-to-coast divorce that pushes them to their personal and creative extremes.
Best Picture, Best Director (Noah Baumbach), Best Actor (Adam Driver), Best Actress (Scarlett Johansson), Best Supporting Actress (Laura Dern), Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing may be areas of opportunity. The film evenly tells the story of a couple breaking up. It both incisively details a system designed to make people fall out of love and creates dual portraits of people forced to re-examine their lives and desires.
10. The Two Popes
Fernando Meirelles directed and Anthony McCarten wrote biographical comedy-drama film The Two Popes. The film is based on McCarten’s 2017 play The Pope. Its best shot is also in acting races. Also because the plot mostly consists of a two-handed conversation about faith and guilt. Pope Benedict and the liberal future Pope Francis must find common ground to forge a new path for the Catholic Church.
