Natalie Portman’s recent reveal makes us wonder romance is brewing between Mighty Thor and Captain America in the MCU
With MCU Phase 4 delayed due to the pandemic, we are still unclear about the Marvel schedule. Before the pandemic hit, we were accustomed to Marvel movies all-year-round. But as things change, this has been the longest gap for fans with no movies to wait for but only to look forward to. However, rumours and speculations are all around keeping us engaged. Interestingly, director Taika Wititi has promised lots of romance in Thor: Love and Thunder and we think its brewing between Mighty Thor and new Cap aka Sam Wilson.
New MCU Phase 4 Schedule
As per the new MCU schedule, Wanda-Vision (2020) will kickstart the MCU Phase 4 on Disney+ further it will be followed by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in early 2021. First Phase 4 movie will come out in 2021 with Black Widow (May) followed by the revised entry of Shang-Chi And The Legen of Ten Rings on July 9, 2021. The Eternals movie will closely follow on November 5, 2021 release date. The untitled Spider-Man 3 will close the year with the intact December 17, 2021 release date.
Watch: THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER | 2019 Comic-Con Panel (Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson & Natalie Portman)
Thor: Love and Thunder will come out February 2022 and will be closely followed by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in March 2022. The Black Panther Sequel is set for May 2022 release with Captain Marvel and Ant-Man and the Wasp sequels following up in July and October 2022 respectively.
Nonetheless, we all know that in Thor: Love and Thunder, we will see Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) yield the Mjolnir as she becomes the Mighty Thor. Not Female thor, not Lady Thor, ‘Mighty Thor’ is the mantle Foster picks along with the Mjolnir and Waititi is all for it.
Jane’s Transformation to the Mighty Thor
Well, in a recent interview with Fatherly, Natalie Portman revealed that her character Jane Foster will undergo cancer treatment. This was something that fans had been speculating since the movie was revealed at the 2019 Comic-Con.
“It’s based on the graphic novel of The Mighty Thor. She’s going through cancer treatment and is a superhero on the side.”Natalie Portman
This shows that the MCU will be borrowing matter from the Marvel comics for Thor: Love and Thunder. Fans can heave a sigh of relief and skip a heartbeat at the same time. This is because Marvel comics finally showing up in the movies means a lot is in store for us. In the Mighty Thor (2015-2016) comic storyline, Jane becomes the Mighty Thor after Thor is deemed unworthy when Nick Fury whispers something in his ears post the occurrences in The Original Sin series (2014).
The tragedy of Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor lies in the fact that becoming Thor would purge her of all the toxins in her body. This included the effects of chemotherapy. So, while she was as strong and mighty as Thor himself, she could never heal from cancer.
Jane Foster becoming Thor and her cancer in Thor: Love and Thunder follows the storyline of Jason Aaron’s The Mighty Thor and All New All Different Avengers. However, fans of Marvel comics found themselves wagging their tongue when All New All Different Avengers #4 came out.
Thor: Love and Thunder’s Romantic Twist
The comic made by Alex Ross showed Mighty Thor (Jane Foster) and the new Captain America (Falcon AKA Sam Wilson) kissing. Until then, she was a stoic character, but here she was found to be passionate. This was equally unusual for the other Avengers and the readers who took notice. And when she kissed him, things got even stranger.
While this may appear to be romantic, the reason for Jane kissing Sam is tragic. She has cancer which is spreading and nothing can be done about it. So is living her life in moments because she does not know how many she has left. In her final words in the scene before taking off, she says, “…Life’s candle burns too briefly not to live in the moment.”
The Avengers don’t know about her state. Only the readers do. And this makes it even more tragic.
While we have never really received any hint at a potential romance between Jane Foster and Sam Wilson in the past MCU movies, now it seems like a possibility. After all, Natalie Portman’s confirmation of Thor’s “unworthiness” and her character’s cancer is proof that Marvel’s movie universe and comics universe are crossing paths. This can lead to either a spur-of-the-moment kiss or a more prolonged romance, like Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff. Be that as it may, Phase 4 seems to get a lot more fascinating with confirmations like this, be it with or without a kiss. And we can barely wait for ‘the party to come us.’
What do you think about this romantic twist translating on-screen between Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor and new Captain America Sam Wilson?
