Marvel’s Young Avenger’s Plans
It has become quite obvious that Marvel Studios is taking deliberate steps to lay a solid foundation for its future young Avengers plan. Although the MCU already has a full movie slate and schedule for Phase 4 and 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the launch of the Disney+ streaming service provided a platform that could almost serve as a dressing room for the big screens.
Introducing a new hero to the big screens, often comes with a lot of ‘backstory’ baggage; one that often has to be properly blended so the main agenda of the movie doesn’t suffer. On Disney+, Marvel has the perfect repository for developing all backstories required and Marvel President, Kevin Feige, has stated that actors on the Disney+ series would also appear in the movies.
Marvel recently cast young Iman Vellani to play Ms. Marvel in the upcoming Disney+ series based on the comic character. In the comics, Ms. Marvel is young Pakistani-American Muslim who lives in New Jersey and was exposed to the Terrigen Bomb. Exposure to the Terrigen Mists turned her into a polymorph, giving her the ability to enlarge and stretch different parts of her limb to incredible lengths.
A devout follower of Captain Marvel, Kamala would eventually take up the title Ms. Marvel in honor of her idol. Although it might not be another two years before we see Ms. Marvel on the small screens, the casting of Iman Vellani for the role is a statement of Marvel’s deliberate efforts at inculcating better diversity. Kamala Khan will be the MCU’s first big screen hero with Muslim descent.
Monica Rambeau’s MCU Future
Actor Teyonah Parris is set to play Monica Rambeau who was first introduced in the Captain Marvel debut movie as a young girl in the 90s. Come MCU phase 4 she is all grown up and making her debut in WandaVision series. She is playing a SWORD agent and is quite visible in the trailers. Interestingly, in the comic Monica Rambeau has gone by the name of Captain Marvel before taking up the mantle of ‘Photon’. With Parris’ casting confirmed in Captain Marvel 2 an intergalactic future is on charts for her.
In Marvel comics Monica and Carol has a long-standing history of working together and teaming up on occasions. It will be interesting to see how MCU treats their relationship.
After almost 5 months of little to no traction, the past couple of weeks since production resumed have been laden with updates and auditions. Now these official announcements have got all hyped up for the upcoming MCU Phase 4 starting with WandaVision on Disney+ from January 15.
