With the appearance of the Skrulls in Captain Marvel, the MCU may be planning to add the Secret Invasion events into its storyline.
Of late, in the MCU, the Secret Invasion storyline has been making rounds. Fans first began talking about it when they saw the Skrulls in Captain Marvel. And they are speculating that the events of Secret Invasion will somehow show in Captain Marvel 2. Reports are suggesting something different. Recent reports say that there’s going to be a Disney+ series that will reveal key elements of Secret Invasion, that will eventually lead to the film.
The Secret Invasion in Marvel Comics
The reason why we are talking about Secret Invasion and the Skrulls is that they share a connection. The Secret Invasion is one of the most significant events in Marvel comics. But first, let’s begin with the Skrulls. The origin of the Skrulls goes back 50 years, with their first appearance in Fantastic Four #2. And since then, they became of the most formidable races in Marvel’s comics universe. Fast forward to 2008, and we see the Secret Invasion reveal itself.

The beginning of Secret Invasion shows the Illuminati travelling to the world of Skrulls to warn them from attacking Earth. The Illuminati is a covert group of superheroes that include Mr Fantastic, Doctor Strange, Tony Stark, Charles Xavier, Black Bolt, and Namor. However, they are captured and experimented on by the Skrulls under the leadership of Queen Veranke. This allows the Skrulls to form a better understanding of the Earth’s metahumans. And this enables them to replicate the metahumans and take on their shape. The Secret Invasion has lots of superheroes that reveal themselves to be Skrulls, all of it being a master sinister plot of Veranke. Also, within comics, the event was a major one for Carol Danvers too. It made her the new favourite woman superhero for many readers.
The Secret Invasion and the MCU
The idea of Skrulls (shape-shifters) infiltrating Earth and replacing members of the Avengers is a great story to continue the MCU Secret Invasion storyline. In Captain Marvel, Karen Danvers shows that the Kree (arch-rivals of the Skrulls) can produce technology capable of replicating superhuman abilities. So a similar thing can also be used by the Villainous Skrulls. We have to consider that not all Skrulls are bad as we see Talos and Soren in the movie.
After all, we have already seen Skrulls taking on the shape of Nick Fury and Maria Hill in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

And with the aftermath of Endgame, they seem to have a perfect advantage with so many people coming back to life. The reason we are saying this because the “snap” brought back a lot of people (half the world’s population) from the dead. And this might have people behave weirdly. While some will have five years missing from their lives, others will have experienced things that half the world hasn’t. While one half of the world’s population will be five years older, the other half will be the same age as five years earlier.
How can the Skrulls be brought into the MCU?
Fans have been figuring out different ways in which the MCU can use the Skrulls and the Secret Invasion. Some are saying that Super-Skrull may arrive, who is one of the most iconic enemies of the Fantastic Four. Another way shows that the Skrulls are using their body-replicating ability, not for sinister means but to hide. For example, in the comics, Galactus was responsible for destroying their homeland.
Moreover, even if we consider that MCU is planning to incorporate Secret Invasion as a way for the Skrulls to replicate themselves as the Illuminati or other superheroes in its storyline, there is an inconvenience.
Most of the superheroes have not been introduced into the MCU yet. Elektra was the first one to be found as an impersonator. If they want to show members of the Illuminati, we don’t have Namor or Xavier or Black Bolt or Mr Fantastic yet either. Or as it is with Marvel, it could bring the Skrulls differently.
However, regardless of which directions MCU heads for an adaptation of the Secret Invasion, It is a very interesting way to set-up a new storyline towards an altogether-new direction. Just as The Avengers was set up for Infiniti War with years in the making.
