Is this the end to the long-standing mystery surrounding the identity of Black Widow’s Taskmaster
Marvel’s Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book recently dropped in and fans are finding new information in the book already! Traditionally the tie-in material is always released after the movie is released as the nature of some info could prove to be a spoiler for fans. The new images from the book surely point at Black Widow’s villain Taskmaster.
In an ideal world, we would have seen the Black Widow movie and would be waiting for the Eternals’ November release. However, as 2020 unfolded, the virus effectively delayed the release of the MCU Phase 4 movies by a year. In the chain of events, Black Widow’s marketing overstretched. Now a new tie-in book titled, Marvel’s Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book has got fans posting on social media.
A fan posted some photos from the book where we can see Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), David Harbour (Alexei Shoskatov/Red Guardian), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova) and OT Fagbenle (Rick Mason). The pictures are from both behind the scenes and from on-set.
Interestingly, Fagbenle’s character Rick Mason has been kept tightly under wraps. Fans got a first look at his character in these photos. In the comic Rick Mason also goes by the code name ‘The Agent’. He is Natasha’s ex-SHEILD colleague as well as an old flame. During 2019 SDCC Fagbenle, hinted at their possible relationship while mentioning Rick has a “complex relationship with Natasha”.
In the MCU, Natasha has been flirting with Steve Rogers in the Captain America: Winter Soldier. She was further linked to Bruce Banner aka Hulk in the Age of Ultron but that romance never fructified. However, fans had been constantly rooting for a tangible love interest in Natasha’s life ever since. As the movie directly follows the events of Civil War it would be interesting to see how Natasha and Rick’s chemistry pans out.
With the gap of about a year between two release dates, there’s always something that is going to slip. Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 1984 had a similar marketing slip with the tie in the book that opens up the plot of the movie. Various leaks had been doing the rounds in the last couple of months. But one that strikes that most is the one which says OT Fagbenle’s Rick Mason is the Taskmaster.

As per the leak, the Black Widow end credit scene which also establishes the Thunderbolts in the MCU will see Taskmaster’s real identity as Rick Mason. While any such leak should be taken with a pinch of salt it seems like something Marvel Studios’ will do. It is also in line with the fact that Marvel has kept OT Fagbenle’s character under tight wraps along with Taskmaster’s identity. In the comic, Taskmaster is a skilled tactician and combat trainer who has photographic reflexes. This makes him a tough opponent as he copies each hero’s fighting style – something we already saw in the Black Widow trailer.
With all the excitement building with the new photos, the answer to whether Fagbenle is really MCU’s Taskmaster or not is still months away.
