Rumors suggest that Sony wants Tobey Maguire to play the role of Uncle Ben in the MCU’s upcoming untitled Spider-Man 3 film.
We have already heard rumours of Tobey Maguire coming into the MCU. We might be seeing him play the Raimi-version of the Spider-Man alongside Andrew Garfield as the Amazing-version in the yet-untitled MCU Spider-Man 3 film with Tom Holland. But, the latest report from Daniel Richtman says that Sony wants Tobey to be the face of Uncle Ben from the MCU. Now, this means that he might be playing two characters in the film.
Fans have already presented their disappointment at the way MCU has disregarded the character of Uncle Ben. To speak the truth, the force behind Spider-Man (or Peter Parker) is but the words of Uncle Ben himself, “With great power comes great responsibility.” It is undoubtedly one of the best lines ever created in the history of Marvel comics. And needless to say, what makes it feel so real, is its connection to reality. Each one of us can connect to the words just the way we can connect with Spider-Man himself.
Ever since Marvel declared that Jamie Foxx would be reprising his role as Electro in the third Spider-Man film, speculations of the film being a Spider-verse film have only grown. Rumors of Marvel reportedly in talks with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield spread like wildfire.
MCU and Spider-Man 3 Rumors
But as for the rumor we are talking about here, Marvel wants Tobey Maguire to not just play his version of the Spider-Man in the MCU Spider-Man 3 but also Tom Holland’s Uncle Ben. Now, this might take some time to wrap our heads around. One possibility is that when Tobey’s Spider-Man arrives in the MCU universe, Tom Holland takes him to be his uncle. Another way could be to first mention Tobey as Tom Holland’s uncle, who passed away earlier, and then reveal Tobey’s Spider-Man.

Another rumor suggests that producer Amy Pascal (former Chairperson, Sony) wants both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield for another project. It will be the closing chapter to the Amazing Spider-Man 2, possibly the Sinister Six. The Sinister Six is a group of super-villains, including Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, Sandman, and Kraven the Hunter. While there’s no news yet about Kraven, the remaining villains have already made their debut in Marvel movies. So, we may see a hint of the Sinister Six in the MCU Spider-Man 3 which may culminate to their debut in other future stand-alone Spidey films.
Uncle Ben in the MCU
If Tobey does return as Uncle Ben, it will be great news for Tom Holland, who has mentioned earlier how he would love it. However, there is one catch. Both Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and the Amazing Spider-Man franchises have shown Uncle Ben. But the MCU has already given Spider-Man a mentor in Tony Stark. And that mantel will pass on to Doctor Strange, whom we will also see in the third Spider-Man movie.
So with two mentors already, introducing Uncle Ben might seem over-the-top and only as a means for the MCU to please the fans. Yet, if it is made possible, the fact that Tobey Maguire is there in a Spider-Man film but and as no one else but uncle Ben is enough to pull fans to the theatres.
