Hulu’s Helstrom announcement has many undertones to it from missing Marvel branding to opening ways for Ghost Rider’s entry into the MCU
The development of MCU Phase 4 has teed up to reveal Marvel’s supernatural and cosmic side. This new phase is very important. As important as Marvel’s decision taken back in 2008 to start a whole superhero franchise on a not-so-popular character.
Contrary to what TV fans are accustomed to Marvel Phase 4 is going to set a different tone. This switch could just be a conscious bid to avoid staleness. There are a lot of exciting heroes whose stories would be absolutely fitting for the big screen.
Marvel’s Helstrom
Helstrom casts an exciting character in the supernatural end of the MCU. He was born a hybrid to a human woman (Victoria Wingate) who mated with Satan, the ruler of hell. Daimon and his sister Ana Helstrom literally have to face their inner demons when they decide to side with humanity against forces of darkness.
Raised on earth, the Son of Satan will battle within between being heir to hell and his human feelings. The series set to premiere later this year will follow the story of the brother-sister duo. The show will chronicle Daimon and Ana Helstrom as they track down a mysterious serial killer.
The official synopsis released on ComicCon@Home reads
“As the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer, Hulu Original Helstrom follows Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Sydney Lemmon), and their complicated dynamic, as they track down the worst of humanity — each with their own attitude and skills.”
Further Helstrom is set to debut like the version before it – on Hulu. The show is in a partnership between Marvel Studios and Hulu. Interestingly, the trailer did not have the custom Marvel introduction nor the studio’s logo. What the missing branding means, considering Helstrom is a Marvel owned character is to be seen.
Marvel-Hulu Helstrom Partnership
With Ghost Rider on his way back to the MCU, Helstrom’s introduction at this point makes perfect sense. Since Helstrom debut on the first issue of Ghost Rider comic and would later go on to join the defenders. Distinguished by a pentagram shaped birthmark on his chest, Daimon has often been sort after by the Sorcerer Supreme.
Apparently, there are tasks that require so much power, recruiting the Son of Satan to help save the day is only wise. Damion Helstrom can exhibit super speed and super strength. He also has a special skill called Soul-burning, which allows him to directly burn the souls of his adversaries.
Although the storyline of Helstrom is rich and will become a favourite among horror fans, it is quite unclear how the show will tie into Marvel Studio’s Phase 4 plans.
Watch: Marvel Hulu Partnership
Speculations suggest the series is set to follow the cue of previous Marvel TV shows like The Defenders, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones. Meaning it would exist in the MCU and probably be affected by the events taking place in Phase 4.
The long line-up of cosmic and supernatural heroes/villains added to the fray is as exciting as it is a chore to keep up with them.
Further, with a lot of the new heroes without origin stories yet. Marvel Studio faces a tricky task of keeping fans from getting confused and mixed up in the numerous plots.
Helstrom will debut on the streaming service this October as part of its “Huluweenlineup.” Other Hulu series premiering in October include Books of Blood, Bad Hair and Monsterland.
The show will star Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon as the two leads. Helstrom will also star Elizabeth Marvel, June Carryl, Ariana Guerra, Robert Wisdom, and Alain Uy.
