While one is a mix of everything superhero, the other filters down from all of it, and yet Joker beats Avengers: Endgame on so many levels.
Todd Phillips’ Joker success has shown that the CGI-less comic book film is better than Russos’ Avengers: Endgame. The frenzy that Joker has created may even beat Endgame’s box office collection. From the time that Joker was announced, the movie was touted to change the pace of an entire particular genre.
Furthermore, the new movie starring an antagonist Joker beats Avengers: Endgame at so many levels. Joker doesn’t fall into any other storyline. So, it isn’t a sequel or a prequel to anything we have seen yet. The Joaquin Phoenix-starrer has independently established itself in the DCEU.
Level 1 – Sheer Acting Brilliance
The films central cast inadvertently revolves around just one man. So, fans had their share of doubts about Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. However, his enactment wasn’t just a fit tribute to Heath Ledger but carried on his legacy in an unparalleled way. In fact, some pundits opine that Phoenix didn’t just carry Ledger’s legacy forward, he bettered the character itself.
Phoenix’s Joker portrayal that redefines one of the most popular fictional evil characters is an Oscar runaway in 2019. We’re sorry Robert Downey Jr. but Iron Man’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame has been overshadowed. Fans are actually placing heavy bets. They back Phoenix to go beyond Ledger’s ‘Best Supporting Actor’ and win ‘Best Actor’ at the Oscars 2019.
Level 2 – Critical Reception
That said, the folks at Disney are trying their level best to secure the ‘Best Actor’ Oscar nomination for RDJ. Tony Stark or Iron Man became Downey Jr.’s defining role that lasted over 10 years. The superhero came to the fore in RDJ’s final MCU appearance in Avengers: Endgame. Unfortunately, shedding a few emotions and sacrificing your life for the planet is not how you win awards. It seems Phoenix’s character in Joker character can beat Iron Man’ s character in Endgame.
On the other hand, before the Joker released in theatres, the movie received the Golden Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival. Its screenings met with multiple standing ovations from cultured audiences at film festivals. At one screening, Joker also got a chest-broadening eight-minute-long standing ovation. The new film has made enough waves already to ensure its cinematic brilliance turns into cult status.
Level 3 – The Resources and the Return
Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame movie was the concentration of American Superhero fervor. A fever that took hold of the world in the last decade. Likewise, it banks on an expensive ensemble of A-listers and computer-generated graphics to compensate for bad scripts and storylines. However, Avengers: Endgame broke every movie record on the planet. It became the highest-grossing film ever, overtaking James Cameron’s epic Avatar. Built on a monumental budget, Endgame earned $2.8 billion worldwide.
On the other hand, the dark, standalone Joker is not a superhero movie. And that’s where Joker beats Endgame first and foremost. It’s a plunge into the dystopian life of a supervillain. Joker is no hero or vigilante. He is also Batman’s greatest nemesis. Built with a reasonable budget of $55 million, Joker broke multiple box office records on the opening weekend. It earned $96.2 million domestically in its first three days. So, Joker has gone on to become the seventh highest-grossing film of 2019. Moreover, it is also the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
Level 4 – Fan Appreciation Index (Read IMDB)
Fans in the Digital Age are not limited to just unrecorded talks. So according to IMDB ratings, Joker beats Avengers: Endgame in terms of fan appreciation all-day long. The Joker has a score of 8.8 out of 10, while Avengers: Endgame stands at 8.5 out of 10. Joker is very different when compared to other non-MCU comic book films like Venom and even Logan. There are long stretches in the movie where it’s also easy to forget that Joker is based on a DC character. Indeed, with a few tweaks, the story could work without any references to the larger myths of the DCEU.
Furthermore, to ensure their voice doesn’t go unheard before the Oscars. Therefore, they have started an online poll between Joker and Avengers: Endgame. Fans are requested to make their views count on the two most anticipated movies of 2019. Which movie do you think is better between Joker and Endgame? Vote here:
Level 5 – While much of Avengers: Endgame is a hangover, Joker blows your brains off
Avengers: Endgame might have intensity, star power, and technology. But the Joker is more profound, with better scenes, cinematic lighting, and some award-winning camera work. Moreover, Phoenix’s acting ability helps him ease into and take control of his interpretation of the character. Joker leaves us all shocked.
Joker is not a film that you can put on if you just want to switch your brain off. It instead blows that grey matter off.
It’s an experience that makes you feel, think and confront emotions that you might not want to. The movie’s concept is also as deep as Phoenix’s character in it. Joker’s makers knew they had something special on their hands. And so, the world sat up and took notice.
Level 6 – You don’t need special effects to see the truth
DC decided to make the Joker as an independent cinema instead of a big-budget blockbuster. That has worked. The movie took Hollywood by storm. Furthermore, the Golden Lion in Venice cemented its candidature of the Oscars 2019.
Without any spaceships, special effects, and caped-men flying, Joker makes it clear that reality surpasses fiction.
The movie allows us to open our eyes and see the truth. It also identifies with the worst scares and the deepest understanding of the society in all of us. Consequently, the Joker brought forth the subjects that plague today’s societies very well… in a very crude, calculated and profound way. So, while Avengers: Endgame remains an all-time watchable movie, Joker becomes a cult-classic for the times of today.
