JJ Abrams is rebooting Superman for Warner bros while we are to see Superman in Black Suit in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the new Superman is going to be the first person of colour.
Diversity is the ‘word’ in Hollywood currently, in 2019 Captain America (Chris Evans) passed on his mantel and shield to Sam Wilson aka Falcon, who would be MCU’s first Black Captain America. Now the news is JJ Abrams is rebooting Superman for Warner Bros. While it’s unclear what would be the future of Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel one thing is certain the new Superman will be a black man.
DC doing Diversity right
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that DC has hired talented essayist and novelist, Ta-Nehisi Coates to pen down the script for a reboot Superman feature. The movie will be produced by J.J Abrams and is set to feature a Black Superman.
Ta-Nehisi Coates has become a highly respected author in the past decade with several popular books. Some of them include We Were Eight Years in Power and An American Tragedy. His book Between the World and Me was adopted for an HBO series. Disney CEO, Bob Iger also highlighted Coates work on the Black Panther comic book as a huge factor in the decision to create the blockbuster movie that featured the late Chadwick Boseman.
“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honour,” said Coates in a statement to Shadow and Act, a website dedicated to the African diaspora in the arts. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”

A New Superman On The Block
“There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity,” said J.J. Abrams in the statement to S&A.
There have been previous reports about Warner Bros trying to put together a Black Superman project in the past. Micheal B. Jordan was spearheading discussions on the Black Superman project and is expected to play the role if the plans eventually map out
As the DCEU looks to adopt a new film structure heading into the new decade, it’ll be worth noting the projects the studio decides to move forward with.
This is the first DC feature known to be in development under Abrams’ expansive WarnerMedia deal, but he has several DC series in the works for streaming service HBO Max, including Justice League Dark and Constantine.

What does this mean for Henry Cavill?
Historically, Henry Cavill was on JJ Abrams’ priority list to play the character. Nonetheless, Cavill found his red cape in 2013 with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. His next appearance will be this month in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Snyder has been hyping the ‘black-suited Superman’ for long now. Even if a new Superman joins the DC ranks thanks to the multiverse, DC can have two Man of Steel at the same time.
