Gollum started off as a nobody hobbit but has since ended up doing much for the epic written by J.R.R. Tolkien. The hobbit is only a small part of the epic world at large in Lord of the Rings yet integral to it. This is DKODING Gollum and Smeagol’s Relationship. We go through the entire series here, Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of The Ring, Lord of the Rings The Two Towers, Lord of the Rings The Return of the King.
The series of books has a prequel story as well, written in what many (including the writer of this piece) would call a masterpiece you cannot take your eyes off of.
The Birth of Gollum in Smeagol
Smeagol and Deagol come across the ring of power. For a brief moment of history, Deagol became the fourth creature of form to ever bear it. The ring bearers have a huge responsibility, the ring has a will of its own. Smeagol kills Deagol and takes the ring from his hands after strangling him with his hands. Such was born Gollum within Smeagol.
The story takes the hobbit from Gladden fields to the misty mountains as the love for his precious grows on Gollum; Smeagol loses all hope of survival. Gollum and Smeagol share a relationship like that of a host with a parasite. The Lord of The Rings movie series often portrays Gollum as the host. This often flips though as Smeagol tries to fight back and be a better being. It seems though that his fate has been decided since birth.

Gollum and Smeagol’s fight
As the story of The Lord of The Rings proceeds, so does the Gollum Smeagol relationship. They continue on their journey with whom they call master. Master being the ring bearer at the time. The thing is that Gollum wants to deceive his master into trusting him for long enough to kill him.
It may be said that Gollum is the negative side of Smeagol. It seems so that Smaegol has done many wrongs in his life; he feels that maybe doing something good in would lead to a better conclusion. In the end, the darkness within wins leading to the light.
Smeagol becomes a slave to Frodo, the ring bearer. In Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers, Smeagol does so by choice to save himself from Sam’s leash. and he tries to be good to him as possible, saving him from a dead lake with dead kings; such it is by the looks of it. Such progresses the fight and it seems that Smeagol may yet win against Gollum. Their relationship is like that of a coin.
The coin flips again…
In Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, we see Gollum taking the Hobbits to the Black Gate but saving them from the minions of Sauron and the vision of Saurons burning Red Eye. Smeagol’s relationship with Frodo Baggins, Gollum and Sam Gamgee take a scenic route. He leads them to Cirith Ungol, the fortress of the kings of Nazgul, Witch-King of Angmar. Gollum takes over Smeagol yet again as the pack is separated by men of Gondor.
This frightens Smeagol, giving Gollum the power to create hatred against Frodo – with the promise of his precious. This goes to show how Gollum and Smeagol’s relationship evolves through the years in Misty Mountains under the spell of the one ring. They hate each other but they hate others more than themselves; the love the ring more than himself.
The next part leads to the inevitable loss of Smeagol and the demise of Gollum with him
Beginning of The End
The creature Gollum leads the Ring-bearer and his ever-faithful Sam Gamgee on a trail to Cirith Ungol. The hobbits are deceived yet again by the creature, only they do not yet know. The ring makes Gollum stronger over Smeagol, leading the relationship to a more agreeable place.
This agreement of right and wrong in Lord of the Rings The Two Towers causes Frodo to be struck by a giant spider who is a relative of another like her from the Elder days of Middle Earth.
The plot leads to Sam saving Frodo and leading the ring closer to Mount Doom. When the two reach Mount Doom though, it is too late for Frodo to leave the ring. It is impossible for Gollum to let anybody else have it. Nothing else matters to the creature.
We see the Lord of the rings The Return of the king end with Gollum biting the One Ring off with Frodo’s finger. Gollum tumbles into the fiery depths of Mount Doom, so does Smeagol with him.
The relationship seems to end with a shout of joy, holding what Smeagol desires most and Gollum needs most. Together in agreement, the two end by bringing light into the world of Middle-Earth.
