The presence of Doctor Strange in Spider-Man 3 ushers in possibilities of a dangerous threat for the web-slingers.
On October 8, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Doctor Strange aka Benedict Cumberbatch has joined the cast of the 3rd Spider-Man movie (Dec 2021) of the MCU. And this will be before we see him in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (March 2022).
It is a fact that in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Doctor Strange is the only one who is aware of the alternate realities that co-exist alongside the one in which the MCU storyline occurred till now. However, reports suggest that the Doctor Strange sequel will be a PG-13 rated horror flick that will explore multiple universes. It will also have ties with the WandaVision series slated to release on Disney+ this year. On the other hand, Wanda Maximoff, AKA Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), will be seen in the Doctor Strange sequel too.
Now, into the Spider-verse, shall we? We first saw signs of a multiverse in Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019), although it was based on Mysterio’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) lies but got Peter really excited. Real theories, however, began brewing with the announcement of Jamie Foxx reprising the role of Electro in third Spider-Man.
It will be his 2nd movie as the villain after Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). Maybe, we should be thankful that Marvel and Sony finally sorted out their deal.
So, it may be that Spider-Man 3 might show some links with the Amazing Spider-Man franchise starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. Which, in turn, means that the “amazing” Spider-Man exists in an alternate universe!
In SPUMC We have Tom Hardy’s Venom (2018), Venom: Let There be Carnage (June 2021), and Jered Leto’s Morbius (March 2021) on the web as well. There have been rumours about Sony wants to bring Tom Holland’s Spidey and Tom Hardy’s Venom together on the big screen. And fans have already seen Michael Keaton’s Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming in the Morbius trailer.

And the best part is that Sam Raimi will be directing the Doctor Strange sequel! Sam Raimi is the guy who gave us, perhaps, the best Spider-Man of all times starring Tobey Maguire. So what if we see Tobey, Andrew and Tom all together in Spider-Man 3? All this does seem a lot like one big multiverse about to have a big bang. But not without a worthy villain.
Morlun in Spider-Man 3?
With the multiverse theory and Doctor Strange’s presence in Spider-Man 3, a formidable villain might be making his way towards the MCU: the psychic vampire Morlun.
Morlun is one of the most powerful villains in the Spider-Man comics universe. He is known to travel from one universe to another, hunting down different Spider-Men. Created by J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5 and Sense8 showrunner) and John Romita Jr, he can absorb the life force of other living creatures, thereby gaining superhuman abilities.
One of the main reasons why we think Morlun may return is because he was the villain in Dan Slott’s 2014 story Spider-Verse. It is very comic that inspired the Oscar-winning movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). In the comic, not only does Spider-Man fight Morlun, but we also see him consulting Doctor Strange regarding how he is dreaming of Morlun, in Marvel’s 2005 comic-book cross-over “The Other.”
So all this does seem to point towards the possibility that we may see Morlun is the Spider-Man 3. But then again, the MCU has never really stuck to its comics properties. It has changed stories and characters at will in the past. Be that as it may, we cannot wait for Spider-Man 3 and all the possibilities the MCU holds. Around 14,000, 605, right?
