Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness has many cameos but what’s the purpose
For the first time in almost a decade, Marvel has not released a single movie this year, owing to the global Coronavirus pandemic. But because of it, the next two years are rapidly shaping up to be a no-holds-barred bonanza for Marvel fans all over the world, with some of the most highly anticipated movies in the lineup! Topping that lineup is Sorceror Supreme Doctor Stephen Strange’s next big-screen outing after Endgame – Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Because when you have an almost infinite number of alternate universes and dimensions to explore, there’s almost no limit to what you can do!
MCU’s Alternate Universe
Marvel has already confirmed that the movie will be chock full of alternate versions of existing MCU heroes from other universes. But the icing on the cake is that a whole bunch of high-profile celebrities are rumoured to have cameo roles in the movie, letting the studio pay homage not only to previous iterations of our favourite superheroes, but also tip the hat to fan-favourite casting choices, Easter eggs, and more.
Watch: Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Including INSANE Cameos!!
The rumoured cameos not only serve the purpose of fan service but also helps the Marvel Studio stay ahead of the curve in the superhero genre. For example, before people can see DC’s Multiverse in The Flash 2022 which features not one but two Batman, Kevin Feige wants to set the standards very high. With a Multiverse movie coming out before the rival studio DC, Marvel wants to give fans a taste of several alternate versions of the same character on screen.
Nevertheless, Tom Cruise is rumoured to play an alternate Iron Man in the Marvel Universe, a direct reference to him wanting to produce and star in an Iron Man movie himself in 1998, despite it falling through, eventually. But as unforgettable as Robert Downey Jr.’s stint as the irreverent and ultimately self-sacrificing superhero is today, Tom Cruise was the top fan-pick for the role for many years, and this would be the perfect nod to the same.
Fans have long been lobbying for everyone’s favourite Good News correspondent, John Krasinski, to play Reed Richards or Mister Fantastic, in the upcoming reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise. But now, rumours are afloat that he might be playing an alternate version of Steve Rogers in Doctor Strange 2! Given that he was initially short-listed for the Captain America role that eventually went to Chris Evans, this would certainly be an exciting development for the MCU.
Meanwhile, with Sam Raimi officially taking over as the new director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we can be sure that a whole Pandora’s Box of cameos could be in the line-up too. The director of the first three Spider-Man movies with Tobey Maguire in the lead, Raimi is rumoured to be trying to get cameos from Tobey, as well as Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland, in the movie, with all three spider-men reprising their respective roles! In addition, Raimi’s favourite collaborators, Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi might both be part of the movie as well.
The Inclusion of Fan-Favourite Characters
Now for the clincher – Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is reportedly also trying his best to have Hugh Jackman’s legendary Wolverine make an appearance in the MCU through Doctor Strange 2! With Disney’s long-awaited takeover of the X-Men franchise from Fox finally over, getting the beloved mutant into the movie seems like an obvious move. But given how vocal and decisive Jackman has been about his retirement from the career-defining role after Logan, Marvel would probably need to offer an insane amount of money or a script too good to turn down, to get the 51-year-old Australian to come back.
Speaking of fan-favourites though, the one and only Keanu Reeves is also rumoured to be a top choice to play the iconic Ghost Rider in the MCU. But as rumour mills go, the John Wick actor is also one of several high-profile actors being considered to play the primary villain in Doctor Strange 2, a mysterious and enigmatic villain known as Nightmare.
Owing to his eerily haunting portrayal of Kilgrave in Jessica Jones, David Tennant is also in the running for the role, along with Matt Smith, both of whom played different iterations of the titular character in the Doctor Who franchise. What’s more, a whole bunch of other celebrities have been linked to the role so far, including the likes of Eva Green, Emily Blunt, Natalie Dormer, Ewan McGregor, James McAvoy, Cillian Murphy, Dan Stevens, and even Jared Leto.
And it doesn’t stop there. Marvel is also planning on having an array of familiar faces in the movie, from Giancarlo Esposito of Breaking Bad and WWE’s Titus O’Neil to ex-Ghost Rider Nicolas Cage, Emma Watson, Ben Barnes, Rebecca Ferguson, Mustafa Shakir, and more.
So if there’s one thing you can be sure of, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is definitely going to be a power-packed celebrity cameo fest of epic proportions, which will change the Marvel Universe forever!
