Natalie Portman reprising her role in Thor: Love and Thunder As Female Thor is something fans are looking forward to. But it might also be her only MCU outing
As Marvel Studios prepares to roll out its next phase, it seems a substitution is in order for the role of ‘God of Thunder’. In Avengers: Endgame, Thor has a discussion with Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie. Wherein he crowns her King of Asgard and proceeds to leave with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The fourth instalment of Thor titled Thor: Love & Thunder is going to unveil Jane Foster as the new Thor. The astrophysicist had a brief relationship with Thor in the origin movie which continued in the sequel. But she hasn’t had much to do since then except for some blink and miss appearances. So news of her becoming the new Thor came as a surprise to MCU fans.
Origins of Lady Thor
For fans who follow the comics, this wouldn’t be much of a surprise though. In the comics, Thor becomes unworthy and hence was unable to pick up Mjolnir. The hammer begins to call out telepathically to Jane Foster who picks it up and becomes the lady Thor. Being a Doctor in Astrophysics, she is able to combine brains and brawl brilliantly. She becomes an even more formidable Thor.

Thor, on the other hand, begins to go by Odinson and wields Stormbreaker. However, being exposed to one of the Infinity Stones, Jane develops cancer which worsens the longer she wields the hammer. A pretty eventful spell as Thor sees her defeat pretty notable foes like Hydra and The Frost Giant.
With Taika Waititi directing Love & Thunder, fans are excited to see his next, after the marvellous Thor: Ragnarok.
Waititi’s genius to balance storytelling with doses of wit and comedy truly made Ragnarok a massive blockbuster. The movie raked in over 850 million USD at the box office. This was a huge improvement from the somewhat underwhelming predecessor Thor: The Dark World.
Jane Foster’s MCU Future
Marvel’s decision to throw a character who hasn’t had much relevance in recent times, into a role with titular responsibilities can seem like a stretch. You could even wonder if she is up to date with the current Avengers team list.
However, with the studio’s affinity for taking huge risks with strange new characters coupled with the success of Captain Marvel. It’ll be interesting to see how they plan to induct Jane Foster into her new role.
If the comics serve as a blueprint, the movie could begin with Foster dealing with trauma from being possessed by the Reality Stone. This could reveal that she has developed terminal cancer due to the sheer power from the stone.
Of course, when she wields the hammer, its power would transform her into mighty Thor, but would also drain her life force in the process. Moreover, she only feels the effects when she puts it down. In Thor’s comic issue #705, Jane Foster eventually dies after the power of Thor drains all her life force.

Although there hasn’t been any news as to whether Portman’s Thor will face a tragic demise. Still, it’s difficult to see her carrying the responsibilities for too long. With Valkyrie’s ascension to ruler of Asgard, she looks a more preferred choice to carry the Thor franchise torch forward.
Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to be released in February 2022, with both Hemsworth and Thompson reprising their roles along with Portman.
