Mark the calendar for December 10 to know Black Widow’s fate: to be released on Disney+ or not
Although the rest of the world has been making significant progress in recovering from the Coronavirus pandemic, the United States has not been doing so well. Only recently, some states have had to shut down again due to a new spike in daily cases and this has affected the movie premiere schedule once again. It has been the tradition for studios to release their movies first in cinemas across the US before other parts of the world due to the enormous fan base it has there. Marvel Studio’s Black Widow that has been delayed by a year is now in a fix and fans and experts are wondering about a Disney+ release of the movie.
Previously Disney released Mulan on their Video-on-demand service called Premiere Access and surprisingly released statistics that showed very positive results. “We’ve got something there in terms of the Premier Access Strategy,” said Bob Chapek speaking after the release of Mulan on Disney+. He also said fans would get more info on the 10th of December when Disney holds an investor day presentation on its streaming strategy.
Is Black Widow Coming Out on Disney+
Just recently, there was news that the Disney board are considering releasing Black Widow on Disney+ just as they did with Mulan since there doesn’t seem to be a realistic date for the full reopening of US theatres. Natasha Romanoff’s Black Widow solo movie was initially supposed to premiere on May 1 in the US but was postponed because of the pandemic. With no visible end in sight, there has been a lot of pressure on Marvel and Disney by fans to release the movie on its new streaming service, Disney+. Ironically, it seems the studio doesn’t have enough faith in its new streaming service to provide good numbers that theatrical release would give.
However, it seems like just a matter of time before they announce their decision to stream Black Widow on the Disney+ streaming service. A new video (below) that’s doing the rounds on the internet confirms the Black Widow coming to the Disney+ with ‘Premier Access’ on May 7. Something similar happened to Wonder Woman 1984 wherein WB went ahead to release on HBO Max as well as in theatres on the same day!

With extra care being taken to preserve continuity, it seems like any further postponement could ruin the already reshuffled movie slate. Originally, Marvel’s phase 4 was supposed to kick off with Black Widow followed by FTWS, The Eternals, Shang-Chi and then WandaVision. The new slate will see WandaVision released first and will most likely be followed by FTWS and then Black Widow. Although the order is totally off, Marvel Studios assured fans that no spoilers will be leaked along the way.
Will The Movie Come To Theatres?
As much as Marvel Studios will prefer that the premiere of Black Widow happens in theaters, the current state of the US doesn’t look good for cinemas and movie houses in the next two to three months. And they are continually hinting at a very likely Black Widow premiere on the Disney+ streaming service.Considering how pivotal the Black Widow solo movie is to the MCU’s timeline execution, it’s understandable that they would have reservations as to what platform would garner the highest traction.
With the considerable success made by Mulan which was released on the Disney+ streaming service back in September, and also with news that Warner Bros plans to release Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max, Black Widow might just be heading to Disney+ in the coming days.
Black Widow is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 7, 2021. It is set to be released in IMAX, and will be the first film released in Phase Four of the MCU.
