Bollywood’s talented actress Deepika Padukone is portraying a role of an acid attack survivor in her next film title, “Chhapaak“. The story is based on a real-life of an acid victim Laxmi Agarwal and her indomitable spirit. The film is scheduled to release on 10 January 2010. In this article, we will help you to know Laxmi Agarawal’s tragic life even closer.

Who Is Laxmi Agarwal?
Laxmi Agarwal is an acid attack survivor and speaks for the right of other acid attack survivors. She is now a TV host and campaigner of stop-sale acid.

Acid Attack
Born in a middle-class family in Delhi, Laxmi Agarwal is just 15 years old when she was attacked with acid. She was going to the nearby bus stop to catch the bus when the unfortunate incident happens to her.

Who Were The Acttakers?
Laxmi knew the attackers even before the attack. Nadeem Khan also is known as Guddu, who is a friend of her brother and she was even a friend with Nadeem’s sister. Nadeem along with his younger brother’s girlfriend attacked Laxmi with an acid.

Why This Happened?
Nadeem Khan, a 32 years old man, who fell in love with Laxmi and wanted to marry her. He proposed Laxmi but she was not interested as Laxmi wanted to focus only her goals of becoming a singer. However, Laxmi continuously rejected Nadeem. Nadeem Khan didn’t digest the rejection and he threw acid on Laxmi.

How Did The Attack Happen?
On that day, Laxmi spotted by Nadeem along with his younger brother’s girlfriend near her house. When Laxmi was going to the bus stop that girl pushed her on the ground and Nadeem threw acid on Laxmi.
Rescue and Treatments
Laxmi is seeking for help but no helped her then she left unconscious on the road. When she was conscious again a man came to her, called the police and splash water on her face. As soon as she reached the hospital, 20 buckets of water poured her skin and her skin was dripping from his face and hands.

Surgeries
The brave girl, Laxmi Agarwal had gone through 7 surgeries. In fact, the Doctors told her parents that she won’t survive. However, she used to have a mark on her nose before the attack that she told doctors to remove that as well. Laxmi thought she looks prettier than before after the surgery. But, when she saw herself in the mirror she was devastated.

Suicidal Thoughts!
After so many traumas in her life and her looks, Laxmi went in depression. She once said that the attackers attack her once, but the society attacked her daily for her fate and her looks. People even suggested her parents to give Laxmi an injection that would kill her. Society negativity gave birth to her suicidal thoughts.

PIL (Public Intrest Litigation) in Supreme Court
In 2006, Laxmi filed a PIL in Supreme Court and pleaded for a total ban of the sale of acid. In 2013, the court ruled in her favour and directed state government to issue an acid-sale licence to an only selected acid retailer. Subsequently, the accused was sentenced for 10 years and his partner is for 7 years.

Works and Awards
Laxmi Agarwal is a founder of Stop Sale Acid, a campaign against acid violence and stop-sale acid.
She was the director of Chaanv Foundation, an NGO that dedicated to the acid attack survivor in India.

In 2014, she was awarded as International Women of her courage by US First Lady Michelle Obama.

She also received an achievement of women Empowerment Award 2019, because of her social work.
Love Life

Laxmi was in a relationship with social activist, Alok Dixit, who is portrayed by Virant Messy in ‘Chhapaak’. However, they decided not to marry each other as a society will come and comment about their looks and mismatching. The couple used to live-in-relationship. They also blessed with a daughter named, Pihu. And, they got separated from each other in 2015.
