The world is in the state of panic over a pandemic, the cureless virus is killing people by the minute and infecting others rapidly. The economies are crashing while isolation grips the globe. The President of the United States, a former Businessman and reality TV star is in command to find a cure and save his people.
And emerge as The Wartime President.
This is no Hollywood movie plot… This is 2020!
American’s approves of Donald Trump’s response to Coronavirus
While there is constant criticism in media about Trump’s response to pandemic Covid-19 the citizens of the United States feels otherwise.
According to a new Ipsos/ABC News poll, 55 per cent of Americans approve of POTUS’ handling of the coronavirus situation while 43 per cent said they disapprove.
In the past week, President of the United States, Donald Trump has shown a change in his outlook towards pandemic coronavirus. He has taken pro-active measures and effectively called himself a ‘wartime president,’ in a press briefing and advised, ‘people should get ready to fight.’
Recalling the bravery America showed during the World War II he spoke to the citizens of the US, “We must sacrifice together because we are all in this together, and we will come through together.”
Trump’s speech has taken a rhetoric turn in referencing the coronavirus a common enemy. He notes in his briefing the fight to slow the spread of COVID-19 is ‘our big war.’
After downplaying the threat of the novel virus mid-January – Trump administration has been holding press briefings every morning in the past week to keep the citizens calm and updated.
As of now, the death toll in the US due to coronavirus is above 200 with more than 14,500 cases recorded.
Trump Administration’s Plans to Defend America
On Wednesday, Trump invoked Defence Protection Act which gives him the authority to influence private industries for emergency response purpose. Many businesses are doing their bid to serve the quarantined community already in their own ways.
Plans are in place for two navy hospital ships to be dispatched to aid the medics who are helping the Covid-19 patients in New York Harbour and the West Coast.
As far as finding a cure goes, ‘hydroxychloroquine’ a drug used as antimalaria would be made available to treat coronavirus. The Food and Drug Administration is fast-tracking the research to find a ‘safe and effective’ drug for the infected.
In the Pentagon, major contingency planning took place on Tuesday, should the conditions worsen in the US. Trump administration is also weighing, the deployment plans for National Guards and Reserve Troops.
The wartime rhetoric by a US President isn’t a new thing. Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D Roosevelt, Jame Madison, George Bush Jr and more are examples that easily come to mind.
America doesn’t like to change its President during the wartime… In 2020 the enemy is not a people, it’s a virus.
And history has a knack for repeating itself…
So maybe Donald Trump can also emerge as the wartime President!
