China’s War With Covid-19
In December 2019, the coronavirus outbreak surfaced in industrial city of Wuhan in China. The virus now identified as Covid-19 is being researched at the very moment. By far the scientists and researchers know that it belongs to the corona family that is responsible for various respiratory tract infections.
Coronavirus spreads by coming in contact with a carrier and it could be anyone. But the good news is that the virus can’t survive without a host and hence the chain of spreading the infection can be broken. Another thing to note is that the structure of the virus makes it vulnerable to surface hence, a good 20 second of hand-washing or using sanitizer can reduce the chances of communication of the virus.
This understanding of the virus is used by the Chinese government to their advantage. The government ordered a complete lockdown isolating citizens. The restraint and discipline can be learnt from people of China, who successfully practised quarantine and were able to break the chain of virus-communication.
Early Detection: Staying ahead of the Curve
In China apart from practising complete lockdown, shutting down the factories and isolating people another thing that helped was the government’s vigilance. The government tracked all the initial cases and was able to stay ahead of the curve. Isolating people helped in taking away the extra pressure from the hospitals and front line workers.
For example, Singapore that has seen the outbreak of SARS has designated clinics for epidemics. Their Infectious Diseases Act gives the city-state wide latitude in prioritizing the common good over privacy concerns.
Now, China is facing another wave of coronavirus as an increasing number of infections are detected among new arrivals from abroad.
