A damsel but not in distress, Stefania Ferrario is burning her critics by breaking the body image norms — one sexy Instagram post at a time!
The concept of ‘beauty’ and ‘sexy’ has changed over the years. In the early 20th century, beauty was defined mostly by facial attributes. Then in the late 20th century to the early 21st century, we saw a transition into a more ‘skinny’ representation of beauty. More the skin show, thinner the models got. Eventually, it almost became the norm and set unrealistic beauty standards. Slowly, women with curves were frowned upon and body shamed. But, NO MORE. The curves are back, and how! Thanks to some kickass plus-size models and body activists industries changed and today the emphasis is on normalizing all body shapes and size.
I want a broad spectrum of bodies to be represented and praised in the media, and to not have them labelled by their size.
Stefania Ferrario

Do you remember probably the greatest sex-icon of the last century? Yes, the white-haired damsel with her dress flowing in the air — Marilyn Monroe. Monroe died at an early age of 37, but is she gone? No, this is not a conspiracy theory piece. It is about a young and upcoming Marilyn Monroe from Down Under — Stefania Ferrario.

Who is Stefania Ferrario?
Born as Stephanie Denise Kightley to an Italian mother and an English father, Stefania is now one of the best-known faces in the fashion array of Australia.
For many of her Instagram followers, she is Marilyn Monroe incarnated.

The 27-year-old model is the face of ‘plus-sized’ models all around the world. However, she prefers to be called just a model and has campaigned to #droptheplus in order to break body stereotypes. It’s interesting to see the positive precedents this young model has been establishing since the start of her career.
Stefania’s original surname is Kightley, but she proudly uses her mother’s surname, which is Ferrario.
Known for her beautiful curves and exhilarating confidence, Stefania possesses drool-worthy physical attributes. With a height of 5’11 ft and a weight of 139 pounds — Stefania Ferrario has an uncanny resemblance to Marilyn Monroe.

Ferrario’s body stats of 39-28-40 with a bra size of 36D may not be according to the conventional modelling standards. But she has a body that average women have. Nonetheless, with her confidence and non-negotiable body activism, Ferrario has brought a change in the fashion industry.

Stefania’s #DropThePlus Revolution
The beau idéal first came into the limelight when she shaved off her hair back in 2012 to raise awareness for cancer. She even helped Cancer Council and Peter Coulson raise money for this cause through a photoshoot in Coulson’s book In My Pants. If you think this was it, then you are wrong.
Stefania again grabbed the media attention for her movement named #Droptheplus. Stefania stood up against the unhealthy obsession the society perpetrated with thinness. In February 2015, she started this campaign along with tv presenter Ajay Rochester. One of her social media post that went viral read:

Breaking Through ‘Plus’ Barriers
Recognising that the use of the term ‘plus-size’ by the fashion industry can be damaging to the minds of young girls. Ferrario made the point about ‘harmful effects’ of calling a model ‘plus’.
She encourages inclusivity and diversity and urged the industry to drop the misleading label.
- “I’m NOT proud to be called ‘plus’, but I AM proud to be called a ‘model’, that is my profession!” She said, in social media post.

I am a model FULL STOP. Unfortunately in the modeling industry if you’re above a US size 4 you are considered plus size, and so I’m often labeled a ‘plus-size’ model. I do NOT find this empowering.
Her campaign didn’t stop with the fashion industry but also reached out to retailers and clothing market. As well as it extended support to other models and women in general around the globe. She told Dazed:
“It’s not just in the modelling industry that the label should be dropped, it’s also in retail because it’s segregating women once again — these stores often open these sections in the back of a shop with less variety, it’s more expensive and there’s not much choice.”
Breaking all the stereotypes, Ferrario is not only the Australian sensual icon, but she is also a skilled human being. Stefania used to be a competitive swimmer. She is also trilingual. Stefania can fluently converse in English, Italian and French. She has come out publicly with her sexual orientation as being Bisexual. All of these things show what a confident and strong woman Stafania Ferrario is — who inspires millions.

Thanks to her influence on the fashion industry, she has been shattering some glass ceilings. Her #Droptheplus campaign has motivated not only young girls from Australia but all around the world to accept their body types and feel comfortable in their body shape.

Just like Marilyn Monroe, Stefania Ferrario has become an icon of beauty and empowerment. As she climbs the steps to success in the fashion industry, we can safely say that more norms will be broken by the curvy enchantress.
