What is the Farmers Protest in India about?
The US pop star created a flutter on Tuesday by tweeting in solidarity with months-long farmers protest in India. The farmers in India are agitating against the new farm laws passed by the Central Government in September last year.
Tens of thousands of young and old farmers have siege the borders in India’s national capital, New Delhi, for more than two months, demanding the repeal of three laws passed in September 2020. The farmers worry the new law will destroy their livelihoods by bringing India’s vast agricultural sector under private control.
Rihanna: The ‘Woke’ Goddess
Rihanna’s tweet on the farmers protest in India is the right example of why we need celebrities of global stature to create awareness on lesser-known issues.
Besides, Rihanna’s 100.9 million followers on Twitter will draw international attention to the subject that it needs.
Following RiRi’s tweet, Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg also posted the same CNN article, expressing solidarity with India’s protesting farmers.
“We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India,” Thunberg tweeted to her 4.6 million followers on Twitter.
How are Indians including Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut reacting
Rihanna’s tweet on farmers protest led to the singer trending on top in Twitter India. However, Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut lashed out at the US singer.
Reacting to RiRi’s tweet, the Mumbai-based actress said, “No one is talking about it because they are not farmers, they are terrorists who are trying to divide India.”
Kangana Ranaut told her three million followers on the microblogging platform.

In another tweet, the former adult film star wrote, “Paid actors,” huh? Quite the casting director, I hope they’re not overlooked during awards season. I stand with the farmers. #FarmersProtest.”
The tweets have led to her trending on top in Twitter India.
