Before his role as Christian Grey, the lovely yet tormented and extremely rich character with a mysterious propensity for fetishes in the blockbuster trilogy Fifty Shades, Jamie Dornan wasn’t a commonly recognized name.
His first film job, in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette (2006), was in the role of a French sovereign’s mystery darling. Sometime in the distant past, fans knew him as Sheriff Graham, who had a nine-scene curve in the show’s first season. He also had a widely praised turn as a sequential executioner in The Fall, next to the awesome Gillian Anderson.

Has the Man with the ‘Golden Torso’ Always Had a Jewelled Life?
Jamie Dornan’s life has always seemed to be as glittery as his career whereas, in reality, his life has had some dark troubles, twists and turns. It all started when his mother, Lorna Dornan, passed away because of pancreatic cancer when he was just a ‘naïve’ teenager.
“I was 14 when my mum got diagnosed and had just turned 16 when she died, I was already a wee bit behind compared to my mates growing up, but I had to grow up pretty fast after that. It has an ever-evolving effect on me, that loss, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.”
However, tragedy once again dug a hole in his heart when a few of his closest mates passed away in a car accident,
“I had a very rough couple of years that I guess … I’m still dealing with both of those things today, every day,”
Dornan fell into a profound melancholy and a very deep depression, he also started drinking, and finally, dropped out of school to seek after acting and modelling as his career.
Through his career, getting gigs was one of the hardest tasks on his way to the top and even when he did, the media did not seem to agree with his work or the casting on the whole.
“Since Dornan is as dull as a catalogue model anyway — he wanders through the movie like an Abercrombie searching for his Fitch — the shopping-list look of the movie makes sense.” Wrote a New York times writer.
Still, when the role of Christian Grey sparked his way, he took a long time to make a decision!
What Got Jamie Dornan Interested in the Fifty Shades Series?
Jamie Dornan has had a tough career, he has had his fair share of struggles, some might say more than his fair share, in his journey to the top.
One of the main things that influenced him and made him accept the role of Christian Grey was his own failure, which was starting to get to him. And ever since then, ever since February of 2015, Jamie Dornan has become a symbol of sex, seduction, and perfection globally!

It’s an alias which he has worn with feelings of relative ‘discomfort’ over the last three years. The title of the ‘sex-symbol’ came immediately following the release of the first Fifty Shades film and only got strengthened through its two sequels. The final movie in the trilogy, Fifty Shades Freed, was one of the greatest successes in the cinema industry. Joining a franchise like Fifty Shades was one of the hardest career decisions that Jamie Dornan had to make.
At the very least, that is how he feels. He went ahead to state, in a recent interview, that while there were many good sides to playing the role of Christian Grey, the decision was “odd” and hard for him.
“It was very odd, to be honest, because you are presented with this incredible opportunity that is going to have a big impact on your life and change many things. To be honest, mostly financially, but again in [my] career, it opened so many doors. But you sort of know it’s going to get panned. Very strange thing”.
That joining the franchise was not an easy choice to make, is additionally evident from the fact that he wasn’t even the first actor to be approached for this role. Charlie Hunnam had the gig initially. His team came up with a few reasons because of which he later bailed out, including planning issues and also that he was a complete germaphobe.
There are both upsides and downsides to breathing life into an attractive book character on the big screen. It certainly did turn out to be a massive boost for Jamie Dornan’s career.
Where Is Jamie’s Career Headed Now?
“I feel like you don’t have a f**king clue what’s right until you read it and you’re like, ‘Oh, this is it. This is what I want to do next, I think I have a stronger sense of what’s not right for me. And one thing with this job is to challenge myself and one thing is to keep a very large element of variety”, Jamie confessed in a recent interview.
He further added that he feels “fortunate” to get the role and is glad that he invested himself in the work he’s done after Fifty Shades. Jamie also shared that there’s “a lot in the market of the $5 to $15 million budget movie”.
“I personally believe that’s where the best scripts are”, he continued. “I’ve done things like Anthropoid or [Marie Colvin biopic] A Private War and some of these movies, I’m really proud of. I’m just lucky they came my way because of the box office success of Fifty Shades”.
Upon being asked, in an interview, if he misses the franchise, he stated that,
“It’s a bit bittersweet to be honest because it’s been four and a half years of your life and you are saying bye to a lot of people, [and] a lot of things that are attached to this franchise. You made friendships that you maintain, and that’s cool. It’s weird when you go through a big journey like this for it to come to an end, but [it’s] also a nice thing because you want to sort of move on to other things and do other things”.
As for the future of his career, he has already made his way into the hearts of a million fans, and hence, is nabbing a lot of scripts and a lot of offers are falling his way. Basically, it’s cha-ching time for Mr Grey!!
What About the Future of the Fifty Shades Series?
E.L. James has just released two different books, in an arranged set of three, that are kind of the other side of the Fifty Shades books. These books, titled Gray and Darker, are indistinguishable from the first two Fifty Shades books. They are just told from Christian Grey’s perspective rather than Ana’s.
This perspective can fit in wonderfully in a book arrangement, but not very conveniently into a film. This is because of the difference in the medium. The Fifty Shades books, that turned into a marvel, were composed from Anastasia Steele’s perspective, and the book only revealed to the peruser what the writer needed them to know.
So, it is conceivable to tell the story from another character’s viewpoint and have it look absolutely new! However, the movies allow us to see the connection, between the darlings, in an unbiased fashion all the more. It leaves no requirement for a Christian-centered narrative since we’ve pretty much previously seen it.
While Jamie Dornan, and apparently Dakota Johnson, are finished with the Fifty Shades films, I wouldn’t close the book on the franchise yet. In spite of the current trend of decreasing returns in the film industry, these movies make a lot of cash. And, regardless of the thrashing they get, there is always an unmistakable craving for these kinds of stories and characters.
I could absolutely foresee E.L. James composing new books with new characters, and Fifty Shades turning into a sort of compilation of delicate dreams. On the other hand, who knows, with the fusing activity and spine chiller components in Fifty Shades Freed, possibly this franchise will transform into suggestive and global experience films. The conceivable outcomes are unfathomable.
