‘The Umbrella Academy’ star Elliot Page has filed for divorce from Emma Portner, his spouse of three years.
Page filed the legal documents on Tuesday, seeking the dissolution of his marriage to Emma Portner. The pair tied the knot around January 2018.
“We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends,” the former couple said in a joint statement, reiterating that they had separated in summer 2020.
The news of the split comes two months after Elliot came out as a transgender male in a heartfelt statement.
Let’s have a look at the five biggest controversies from Elliot Page’s personal life.
5. A Secret Relationship and a Surprise Wedding
The 33-year-old “Umbrella Academy” star first hinted at a relationship with Portner, a dancer and choreographer, by posting pictures with her in the summer of 2017. Emma teaches at the Broadway Dance Center in NYC and has featured in Justin Bieber’s “PURPOSE: The Movement” music videos & tour performances.
The two announced of their surprise wedding via Instagram just after New Year’s of 2018. Page wrote, “Can’t believe I get to call this extra0rdinary woman my wife.”
4. Elliot Page Pronouns
The “Juno” and “Umbrella Academy” star formerly known as Ellen Page said that they are transgender, want to heretofore be known as Elliot Page, and that their pronouns now are he/they.
The Canadian actor and producer rose to prominence for his role in the film and television series ‘Pit Pony’, for which he even won a Young Artist Award, and for recurring roles in ‘Trailer Park Boys’ and ‘ReGenesis.’
3. Coming Out as Gay in Feb 2014
On February 14, 2014, Page, who was then presenting as female, came out as gay during a speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s “Time to Thrive” conference in Las Vegas. His coming out announcement was met with mixed reactions, with many celebrities congratulating the actor.
2. Coming out as Transgender in Dec 2020
After coming out as gay in 2014, Page announced he is a transgender man in Dec of 2020. “My joy is real, but it is also fragile,” Page said in a statement. Portner supported him at the time and took to Instagram to express her love. “I am so proud. Elliot’s existence is a gift in and 0f itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you,” Portner wrote.
1. Outed as Gay on the set of X-Men
In 2017, Page alleged director Brett Ratner outed her as gay in 2005 on the set of X-Men: The Last Stand. The actor had shared the chilling account of numerous episodes of sexual harassment on FB. Detailing the horror, Page wrote, “I was a young adult who had not yet come out to myself. I felt violated when this happened but didn’t say a word.” Page was 18 at the time.
Inarguably, Elliot Page has had his fair share of a whirlwind of controversies in his personal as well as professional life. As turbulent as it may sound, we’re happy till he finds peace and success in whatever he pursues.
