Ty Burrell was a lot of things but not ‘appealing, charming, or funny’ enough for ABC’s Modern Family. Well, who knew that one day the show would be incomplete without him!
ABC’s The Moden Family is coming to an end after 11 seasons, 3 families and some of the best bitter-sweet memories. But a show that has successfully run for over a decade needs a fitting end. Before the final episode goes live, ABC aired an hourlong documentary titled, ‘A Modern Farewell‘. Undoubtedly, it was a necessary and lovely excuse to recall everything. But one anecdote about Phil Dunphy’s actor Ty Burrell stood out.
- ABC’s Modern Family has said its last goodbyes after successfully running for 11 years.
- Before the final episode, the channel aired a documentary, A Modern Farewell.
- One of the anecdotes from the documentary stands out. Apparently, ABC did not see Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy of Modern Family
The Modern Family has finally said its last goodbyes. Now starts the era of talks about reunions and memories. But before the family signed off, the channel complied all the memories in the form of an hour-long documentary titled ‘A Modern Farewell’.
A Modern Farewell: Ty Burrell Wasn’t A Choice For Modern Family’s Phil Dunphy
Ty Burrell was nominated as the Best Supporting Actor in Comedy Series for eight times at the Emmys. Not only this, he even took home the prize twice. This makes it hard to think that ABC wanted nothing to do with Ty Burell when they were looking out for Phil Dunphy.
ABC had fixated on the image of Modern Family’s Phil Dunphy and thought Ty Burrell did not fit it.
So, ABC thought Ty did not fulfill Phil Dunphy, a goofball family man and an amateur magician. Modern Family co-creator Steven Levitan explained, “We wrote the part of Phil for Ty Burrell, and we went to the network and said, ‘We want Ty Burrell for this.’ They weren’t big fans.” But the network (ABC) wasn’t fully convinced.
In fact, did you know, Friends star Matt LeBlanc was offered the role? But he did not take it as he was skeptical that he could embody the character well enough.
Not Appealing, Charming, Funny
Later, in the documentary A Modern Farewell, Ty Burrell recalled, “I got word that it was basically over. “They’re not finding you appealing, charming, funny. Basic things about you personally that they don’t like.”
Subsequently, Ty Burrell (more famously known as Phil Dunphy) proved he was the perfect fit for the role. He shot a funny scene (wherein a dad accidentally hit his son with a BB gun) and sent it to the network. ABC was really impressed with it and the scene even made it to the Modern Family’s pilot!
