Google AI team recently made a grandiose claim of achieving Quantum Supremacy through Sycamore Processor. However, the reality is far ahead.
Google in a recently made announcement officially proclaimed that it achieved Quantum supremacy through its highly advanced Sycamore processor which was able to conveniently overwhelm the world’s most powerful supercomputer.
According to Google, the Sycamore processor was able to perform a certain calculation in 200 seconds which on the other hand would have taken 10,000 years for the world’s most powerful supercomputer.
Conventional computers use ‘bits’ (1’s and 0’s) as the basis of their calculations. In layman terms, these bits represent ‘yes’ and ‘no’ function or call it an ‘on’ and ‘off’ function.
Working in combination, these bits are used to handle logical tasks. Meanwhile, Quantum computing uses a property of sub-atomic particles wherein they can simultaneously exist in different states. A quantum bit, or qubit, can thus be both one and zero at the same time. In an argot, this is called superposition.
Being Entangled is another property of sub-atomic particles meaning that they can influence each other’s behavior in a discernible way. When entanglement is combined with superposition, it leads to an exponential increase in computing power with each additional qubit. Thus Google is claiming Quantum Supremacy.
The Sycamore processor, designed by Silicon Valley, is to have 54 Qubits arranged in a two-dimensional grid.
The Real Story behind Quantum Supremacy
Meanwhile, the rival company – IBM- and the company operating the supercomputer that Google claims to have beaten disputed the underlying claims. IBM said that Google is hyping its achievement and misleading people.
They further added that with the help of additional disk storage in the Summit supercomputer, made by IBM, it can solve Google’s random number problem in maximum two and a half days, and with greater accuracy,
The truth behind the claims seems different, however, for the moment, the search giant has made the details of its research public. Allowing the scientific community to fully scrutinize its Quantum Supremacy.
