Reliance Jio and state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL)—gained new subscribers in October, leading to marginal growth in overall telecom user base to 119.2 crore
Reliance Jio in September added over 1.3 crore subscribers to its network, while its rivals Bharti Airtel, Idea and Vodafone together lost over 1 crore customers, as per industry reports. Jio’s subscriber base was 23.9 crore in August this year.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (Trai) data for August showed. In its financial earnings report for the quarter ended September 2018, the company had claimed its subscribers’ number at 25.2 crore — showing a rise of 1.4 crore from August.
Only two operators—Reliance Jio and state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL)—gained new subscribers in October, leading to marginal growth in overall telecom user base to 119.2 crore, according to Trai data released Wednesday.
Reliance Jio and BSNL jointly added over 1.08 crore new mobile phone customers, while resting of the operators—Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel, Tata Teleservices, MTNL and Reliance Communications—lost more than 1.01 crore customers. Reliance Jio alone added over 1 crore and BSNL added 3.66 lakh customers.
Visitor Location Register, a key metric reflecting the number of active users on a mobile network, indicated that 99.57% of the customers were active for Bharti Airtel, 94.47% for Vodafone, 92.59% for Idea, 82.26% for Jio and 56.52% for BSNL.
Data collated by regulator showed that the total number of mobile and landline subscribers in India rose a tiny 0.05% to 1.192 billion at the end of October from end-September.
